Fill out a learner's permit application

You can obtain or download the application form for the issuance of a learner's permit directly from me, from your municipality of residence or from the Road Traffic Office (also online). Please read it carefully and fill it out completely and truthfully.

Download: Learner's permit application

Eye Test

The list of approved opticians and ophthalmologists for the eye test can be accessed using the QR code on the application form. The learner's permit application and a valid identity card must be taken to the eye test. The result is entered directly on the learner's permit application. The eye test is then valid for 2 years.

Good to know: Anyone who already has a learner's permit or driving license and wishes to acquire a new category of permit no longer has to take an additional eye test (valid from 01 March 2024 for newly issued learner's permits). Permit holders must always meet the vision requirements.

First Aid Course

If you already have a category B, B1, A or A1 driver's license, you no longer need to submit the first aid certificate. The First Aid Course can be completed from the age of 16 and is valid for a maximum of 6 years. In most cases, it lasts 10 hours and is divided into two days, often on weekends or in the evening. Holders of a driving license in one of the above-mentioned categories as well as doctors, dentists, veterinarians, nursing staff with a diploma or certificate of competence, instructors of emergency assistance courses, etc. (in accordance with Article 10, paragraph 5, letters b - e, VZV), are exempt from attending the course.

My tip:  Attend your First Aid Course at the Samaritan Association of the Canton of Zug and take a few friends with you - because it's simply more fun together.

Submitting learner's permit application (LFA)

You must now submit the completed learner's permit application in person to the residents' registration office in your municipality of residence or directly to the Road Traffic Office.

Do not forget: Include a current color passport photo and, if required, a valid original emergency responder's card, and bring an identity card or passport to the audition. Foreign citizens require a orginial residence permit.

Good to know: The application for the learner's permit can be sent to the Road Traffic Office at the earliest two months before reaching the minimum age. A new photo is required for each learner driver application, even if you have already submitted an application for the learner's permit or are already in possession of a driver's license. A photo booth is located at the main entrance of the Road Traffic Office. Only vending machine photos or photos taken by a photographer are allowed. Self-printed PC pictures will be rejected.

Driving Theory Test

Once your application for the learner's permit has been approved, you will receive the registration for the basic theory test by mail within 5-10 days and can arrange an examination date onlie in the eDispo. The access code is valid for two years. Now you need to prepare for the upcoming basic theory test (with an app for download, CD-Rom, or online - make sure to use asa approved questions). The basic theory test is done on the tablet (language of choice: D,F,I,E) and contains 50 questions, which you have 45 minutes to answer. You can score a total of 150 points. You are allowed a maximum of 15 faults. Note: The asa has published only 66% of all available questions. If you already have a category B, A or A1 driver's license, you are exempt from the basic theory test.

Good to know: The minimum age is 17 years. The basic theory exam can be taken at the earliest 1 month before reaching the minimum age. You can find a large selection of learning materials for the basic theory test in the app store for download, in specialist shops or on the Internet. The Road Traffic Office of the Canton of Zug does not recommend or distribute any learning materials.

Practical Driving Lessons

After a successful basic theory test, you will receive your personal learner's permit valid for 2 years. Now you can start with the practical driving lessons with the driving instructor and, if possible, consilidate what you have learned with private learning rides - because as you know, practice makes perfect and this applies in particular to driving.

At the practical driving test, an independent, rule-compliant, safe, cooperative and environmentally conscious driving style is required - a big but achievable goal. From the first driving lesson on, you will be trained systematically, efficiently, professionally and goal-oriented with the most modern learning methods, so that you are optimally prepared for the driving test and also immediately successful. Choose the pace of your driving training yourself, because your goal is also my goal. If you bring enough time, will and flexibility, I also offer you an intensive driving education in a rush.

Good to know: For admission to the practical driving test of catg. B, a learner's driving permit of at least 1 year is required. No learner's driving experience is required for drivers who obtain a learner's permit from the age of 20 or who obtain a second learner's permit before the age of 20. The learner's permit is only valid in Switzerland and must be carried in the original on every learner's ride. During the entire driving training, a general driving ban applies for learner drivers as well as for accompanying persons in case of impaired driving, e.g. under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

My tip: Start your driving training with the practical driving lessons with the driving instructor - because it always takes longer to improve what you have learned incorrectly than to learn something new correctly right from the start. To ensure that your driving training this year is efficient and successful, I recommend that you have a training talk with your driving instructor in advance. In this way we ensure that your necessary learning driving practice is also controlled in the private environment and can be checked at any time.

Be successful - I will gladly support you to reach your personal goal!

Traffic Safety Course (VKU)

In order to be admitted to the driving test, you must first have attended the mandatory Traffic Safety Course (VKU). I recommend that you attend the VKU as soon as possible so that you can immediately apply what you have learned in your driving lessons. A valid learner's permit is a prerequisite. Exception: If you already have a category A, A1 or B1 driving license, you do not have to attend the traffic Safety Course.

Practical Driving Test

As soon as you are ready for the test, your driving instructor will register you for the practical driving test. This usually takes +/- 60 minutes and is conducted by an examination expert from the Road Traffic Office. The driving test in the canton of Zug is officially in German. I will carefully prepare you for the exam so that you can easily follow the instructions of the expert. Normally you will take the driving test with your usual driving school car - you know it from your preparatory driving lessons and are very familiar with it. Now you can prove what you have learned!

After a successful practical driving test, you will receive an official test stamp in your learner's permit. Congratulations for your test success - from now on you are allowed to drive a category B car without an accompanying person. As a new driver, you will receive your temporary driver's license on probation in credit card format about 10 days later (valid for 3 years - noted on the driver's license under the heading 4b "Expiration date").

Failed your driving test? This is no embarrassment, because throughout Switzerland a good third of all learner drivers do not pass the driving test at the first attempt. Accept the mistakes you have made, learn from them and prepare yourself seriously for a second attempt - now you will certainly be successful! For a third attempt, you need written proof from your driving instructor that you have completed the practical driving education. If the third driving test is also negative, you will only be admitted to the fourth attempt if you have successfully completed a computer-assisted driving aptitude test. If you fail the practical driving test four times or if the driving aptitude test is negative, the validity of your learner's permit expires. If you want to retake the practical driving test, you will need a positive traffic psychology certificate confirming your driving aptitude.

Good to know: If the probationary driving licence has to be withdrawn due to the commission of a moderate or serious violation, the probationary period shall be extended by one year. The probationary driving licence expires if a further moderate or serious violation is committed during the probationary period. A new learner's license can be applied for at the earliest after a waiting period of at least one year since the commission of the offense and proof of fitness to drive by means of a positive traffic psychology report. During the probationary period, a general ban on driving under the influence of alcohol still applies - an alcohol zero tolerance!

  • Who drives, does not drink
  • Only get behind the wheel when you are rested
  • Adjust speed
  • Focus on the road

My tip: If you don't overestimate your abilities and drive with foresight and defensively, you're well on your way to getting through the probationary period safely.

WAB-Course

In order to obtain a permanent driving license, you must attend a practice-oriented WAB course (part of the 2-phase training) in the first year of the probationary period.

The WAB-Course improves your ability to recognize and avoid dangerous traffic situations before they occur. Experience emergency braking and cornering on a closed track. At the same time, it raises your awareness of your own abilities and optimizes your traffic sense so that you can develop a cooperative and environmentally friendly driving style. True to the motto: learning through experience.

Good to know: If you forget to visit the WAB-course in the first year of your trial period, you can expect a fine of up to CHF 300.00 in the case of a police control. If you are unable to attend the WAB-course in the first year of the probationary period, the period can be extended if there is a demonstrable and weighty reason. If you have not attended the WAB course by the time your probationary driving license expires, you are immediately no longer entitled to drive. Contact the Road Traffic Office immediately so that you can catch up on the course.

My tip: Plan your further training early and attend your WAB-course at TCS Touring Club Schweiz (Rabatt für TCS-Mitglieder), VAZ-TCS Verkehrsausbildungszentrum in Erstfeld (courses also available in English), WAB Zentralschweiz in Ruswil, or at Eventcenter Seelisberg AG (price tip) and take a few friends with you - because it's simply more fun together.

More information and other course organizer about the WAB-course can be find at www.2-Phasen.ch

The definitive driver's license
Congratulations - you have reached your goal! After the probationary period (min. 3 years), you will receive your permanent driver's license directly from the Road Traffic Office. A valid probationary driver's license and timely attendance of the mandatory WAB course are required.

My tip: For your own interest, continue to follow the recommendation: "Never overestimate your own abilities and always drive with foresight and defensively."

I wish you continued fun and joy in driving - and always a safe and accident-free ride.

Step by step - in 4 levels to exam maturity

Pre-training - Basic training - Advanced training - Perfection training

1. Pre-training - car under control

You will be familiarized in detail with the handling of the car. In the process, you will learn the basic understanding of driving dynamics and the interaction of the individual motion sequences - because safe control of the car is the basis of driving. The first driving tests take place exclusively on roads and squares with little traffic. The main focus is on getting to know the car.

2. Basic training - road reading and anticipation

Your car operation becomes increasingly automated and you develop a feeling for the correct lane and speed configuration. You will learn the correct gaze and observation technique and a correct dangerous behavior mainly on roads with little traffic. Another part of the basic training is getting to know the car dimensions even in tight spaces and perform various parking and turning maneuvers for this purpose. Simply put, it's about getting to know the road.

3. Main training - swimming along in the traffic and always keeping an eye on your partners

Here the areas of the basic training are further automated and consolidated. You learn to incorporate the influences of your traffic environment into your driving behavior by adjusting your speed according to the situation, intuitively anticipating, planning ahead, detecting moments of danger and anticipating the behavior of road users. You develop a responsible and environmentally conscious driving style and you can increasingly move independently and safely even on busy roads. In plain language you get to know your traffic partners and their behavior.

4. Perfection training - drive independently and make the right decision

You are gradually reaching test maturity and now have to prove yourself in all traffic areas. This also includes correct driving at higher speeds on the motorway/car road. You independently assess complex traffic situations and adapt your driving behavior correctly to the situation. We will continue to test and fine-tune your newly acquired driving skills with pre-test drives until you can demonstrate an independent, rule-compliant, safe, cooperative, environmentally aware and responsible driving style even under mental stress. Now you can prove what you have learned at the driving test - good luck!

Be successful - I will gladly support you to reach your personal goal!

Private learning drives - everything you need to know for accompanying persons

You would like to accompany a learning and practice drive but you don't know exactly which requirements you have to fulfill?

Many young people can hardly wait to start driving. In addition to driving lessons in the driving school, learners like to rely on private learning drives to save the budget and gain more driving routine. This is advisable, because practice makes perfect - especially when it comes to driving. But there are a few things to keep in mind:

General

  • With advantage, driving education begins at the driving school - icensed driving instructors know all the legal basics and offer professional driving training. Step by step, the learner driver learns the necessary tools and can already practice and consolidate what he has learned after a few driving lessons with private learning drives - because it always takes longer to correct what has been learned incorrectly than to learn something new correctly from the start. This usually contributes a lot to the learner driver's self-confidence. Furthermore, driving school cars have additional interior and exterior rear-view mirrors as well as pedals on the passenger side. With these, the driving instructor can, if necessary, influence a driving maneuver of the learner driver, so that dangerous situations can be recognized early and avoided. This increases safety in road traffic and gives the learner driver a better feeling.
  • Private learning rides are expressly encouraged - they improve the driving routine immensely and are invaluable, but they never replace professional driving training - however, they are a good supplement to it. In order for the driving training to be efficient and successful, it is advisable to have a training meeting with the driving instructor. In this way, it can be ensured that the necessary learning driving practice is also controlled in the private environment and can be checked at any time.

  • Private learning drives are very safe - practically no accidents happen and they are the best preparation for the practical driving test. The Swiss Council for Accident Prevention (BFU) therefore recommends that novice drivers drive a minimum of 3,000 kilometers before taking the driving test - this corresponds to approximately 100 - 120 hours of driving experience, divided into driving lessons with the driving instructor and many private learning drives.

  • The legal requirements for accompanied learning drives are regulated in the Road Traffic Act (SVG). Additional valuable tips will help you to make private learning drives even safer.

At a glance - the most important requirements

Learner

  • has a valid category B learner's permit and must carry the original with them
  • has not drunk alcohol (0.0 per mille) and is drivable
  • stays within Switzerland during the learning drive
  • practices the basics in a place with little traffic (parking lot, area, etc.)
  • drives on roads with little traffic only when the basics are correct
  • drives on busy roads only with sufficient training
  • drives on roads and freeways only when ready for the test (definite test date)

Accompanying Person

  • is at least 23 years old
  • has held a permanent driver's license of category B for at least 3 years and must carry the original with them
  • has not drunk alcohol (0.0 per mille) and is drivable
  • sits on the passenger seat (exception: on training grounds, when reversing or parking)
  • must be able to reach at least the handbrake easily
  • is responsible for safety and compliance with traffic regulations
  • is able to take over the driving of the learner vehicle at any time
  • accompanies only one person outside the family on learning drive per year

Learning Car

  • is registered and therefore compulsorily insured against third party liability
  • is operationally and roadworthy
  • has the handbrake easily accessible and operable positioned between driver and passenger
  • has a manual hand brake or a permissible electric parking brake
  • may has an electric parking brake, provided its effectiveness is comparable to a manual handbrake
  • has an L-plate (white "L" on a blue background) clearly visible at the rear during the learning drive

Requirements for the accompanying person

The accompanying person must be at least 23 years old and have held the permanent driver's license of the corresponding category for at least 3 years. Anyone who has a probationary driving license or has had to deposit it temporarily is not authorized to accompany learner drivers on learning drives. - (Article 15, par. 1, SVG). It ensures that the learning drive is carried out safely and that the learner driver does not violate traffic regulations - (Article 15, Par. 2, SVG). She must sit next to the learner driver in the vehicle, except on practice areas, when reversing and or parking - (Article 27, Par. 2, VRV).

During the entire driving training, a general driving ban applies to learner drivers as well as to accompanying persons in the event of driving incapacity, e.g. zero tolerance applies to alcohol - (Article 31, Par. 2, SVG). The accompanying person must be capable of driving the vehicle at any time.

Requirements for the private learning car

The requirement is a vehicle that is safe to operate and roadworthy - (Article 29, SVG). The accompanying person must at least be able to easily reach the handbrake - (Article 27, par. 2, VRV). This means that the handbrake must be in the middle between the driver and the passenger, easy to operate (without blocking the seatbelts) and work properly. Your learning car has either a manual handbrake or an approved electric parking brake EPB.

Caution with electric parking brakes EPB

More and more cars today are equipped with an electric parking brake. Therefore, it is important and before the learning drive to check whether the effectiveness of the electric parking brake meets the legal requirements.

Electric parking brakes can be designed in different ways. Some cannot be operated at all above 6 km/h, others function more like "conventional" hand brakes or brake via the built-in ABS. Some can be reached from the driver's seat, others cannot.

Electric parking brakes are approved for learning and test drives if they can be reached from the passenger seat, can be operated while driving and are comparable to a manual handbrake in their mode of operation!

Good to know: If an electric parking brake is applied, it must be possible to brake the car from all speeds in a controlled and graduated manner, to interrupt it if necessary, or in an emergency to bring it to a standstill, without the learner driver being able to prevent or even override this by pressing the accelerator pedal.

The braking functions and braking effect must be clarified and checked before the learning drive. If anything is unclear, the operating instructions of the car may provide information or ask your garage owner. Anyone who undertakes a practice drive with an unauthorized parking brake can be fined - in the canton of St. Gallen, for example, with 300 francs. If you take the driving test with your private car equipped with an electric parking brake, you must provide written confirmation from the car manufacturer or importer that the brakes function in accordance with the regulations. Confirmations from garages/workshops will not be accepted.

Before and after the learning drive / practice drive

An L-sign (white L on a blue background) must be attached to the rear of the car in a clearly visible position at the beginning and removed again after the end of the learning drive - (Article 27, Par. 1, VRV). For your increased safety while driving, it is recommended to attach additional rear view mirrors (inside rear view mirror and outside rear view mirror). Before driving away, make sure that the seats, head restraints, seat belts and rear view mirrors are properly adjusted.

During the learning drive / practice drive

All beginnings start with a parking space - until you get the basics right: At the beginning of driver training, practice in a place with little traffic and plenty of room to maneuver. Be patient and start slowly. First, get the basics right such as: seat and mirror adjustment, starting, steering, signaling, shifting and stopping. Only drive where you have a good feeling and practice in large parking lots at the beginning. On weekends or in the evening, for example, empty parking lots of companies or shopping centers are suitable.

All beginnings are difficult - practice, practice, practice: Only switch to low-traffic road traffic (choose an easy route) when you feel safe and hae practiced enough. As the accompanying person, you bear the responsibility and should therefore be able to assess the current learning level of the learner driver - the learning journeys should be designed accordingly. Basically, the learner driver should have automated the operation of the vehicle to a certain extent and it should be possible to observe the traffic at the same time.

Learner drivers are not allowed to drive on busy roads until they have been sufficiently trained - freeways and freeways only when the learner driver has reached examination maturity - (Article 27, Par. 4, VRV). On roads with heavy traffic, starting on inclines, turning and reversing and similar exercises are prohibited, and in residential areas they are to be avoided as far as possible - (Article 27, Par. 5, VRV). The accompanying person must sit next to the learner driver in the car, except on practice areas, when reversing and or parking - (Article 27, Par. 2, VRV).

Other valuable tips for private learning rides that you should definitely consider:

  • It is advantageous that the accompanying person knows the learner driver very well, a parent, brother, sister, uncle, aunt, neighbor or a good friend, as mutual trust is absolutely necessary. The accompanying person should be fit for road traffic and regularly drive a car. If possible, always practice with the same accompanying person.
  • If possible, practice everywhere and with varying traffic volumes, day and night as well as in all weather conditions. Flat, comfortable and well-fitting shoes are suitable for driving.
  • Learner drivers must always be attentive and maintain an overview of the traffic situation: Look as far ahead as possible and adapt your driving behavior to the situation. When turning and changing lanes, pay attention to the traffic behind and to the side (interior mirror, exterior mirror, side view / control view), look all around when maneuvering and actively move your head. They should signal their intentions early by indicating and lane in as well as making eye contact with road users and keep sufficient distance to the front and to the side - thus, as an accompanying person, you should not only pay attention to the traffic, but also keep an eye on the learner driver.
  • Formulate orders early and clearly. Make precise and concise comments while driving and address simple mistakes. For detailed explanations and dialogs or after dangerous situations, stop at the next possible point and reflect on your driving behavior - if possible, also bring in your own experiences!
  • Avoid stress and risks: In the beginning, choose an easy route to practice in a relaxed way.
  • A good learning drive takes no longer than 60 - 90 minutes at a time, otherwise concentration is lost.
  • Do not accompany if you yourself feel unwell or ill. Only those who are healthy, well-rested and emotionally balanced belong behind the wheel.
  • Stay calm, cool and patient, even in critical situations. At the beginning, stalling the engine or shifting gears with a manual transmission happens more often and is quite normal. Let tailgaters overtake you and make room for them accordingly. If he honks, he doesn't think - don't get rattled.
  • Bringing along additional persons in the learning car "Carrying passengers" is generally permitted. Additional persons in the back seats should only ride along when the learner driver feels safe while driving and cannot be distracted by anyone.
  • After completing the learning drive, a discussion of the positive and negative points is recommended. When practicing, mistakes are not only normal, but an important learning factor. In this way, the learner driver gains confidence and learns something new every time. If there are any uncertainties, your driving instructor will be very happy to answer any questions you may have.

Is a companion available but not a learning car?

Those who find a suitable accompanying person but no suitable learning car can practice with a Mobility car. The Mobility learner driver subscription was created specifically for learner drivers who want to gain driving experience. The accompanying person also needs a Mobility subscription for this.

Who is liable for private learning rides and how are they insured?

As an accompanying person, you are responsible during the learning drive. Neglect of your duties can be sanctioned with a fine, fine or imprisonment. In addition, you may be given a warning or even have your driver's license revoked - (Article 90, SVG). Fortunately, most learner drivers are careful and attentive, so crashes on accompanied learning drives are rare. Still, it's worth checking insurance issues in advance. Here are the most important facts:

Check your current insurance policies
For accompanying persons the normal liability insurance is sufficient. Check the coverage for accompanied learning drives, especially if one has not excluded them in advance to save on premiums. Simply contact your insurance company if you have any unanswered questions.

Damage to third parties
The practice car has mandatory third party liability insurance if it has a valid license plate. Motor liability insurance covers damage caused by the insured car to other property or persons. It does not matter who was driving the car at the moment of the accident. Of course, this person must have a valid learner driving license and permission to drive the car.

Damage to the self-driven car
If the learner driver causes an accident with someone else's car, the insurance coverage is the same as if the owner had been driving. However, young drivers under the age of 25 pay a higher deductible. The learner driver must arrange with the vehicle owner who will pay for the costs. These depend on the type of car insurance:

  • Fully comprehensive insurance: Newer cars are often fully insured, leased cars always. With fully comprehensive insurance (recommended for learning drives), damage caused by self-inflicted collision is also insured. In the best case, it is an insurance with bonus protection. Without bonus protection, the vehicle owner pays - in addition to the contractually agreed deductible - higher premiums in subsequent years.
  • Partial cover insurance: Since the more expensive comprehensive insurance premiums are hardly worthwhile for older cars, they are often only partially covered. Thus, self-inflicted collision damage is not covered. The vehicle owner bears the entire repair costs for his own car.

Is third-party driver insurance worth it?
If the practice car belongs to a person outside the own household, then a third-party driver insurance is recommended. This covers all costs incurred by the vehicle owner: in the case of fully comprehensive insurance, the deductible and bonus loss, without fully comprehensive insurance, the entire damage. "Driving someone else's motor car" is a component of your own personal liability insurance. Caution: Many insurers define how often or how regularly the third-party car may be used. Find out more in the general terms of contract (AVB).

Are young people automatically insured as well?
Young people in education who still live in their parents' household are automatically included in their private liability insurance. Most insurance companies require a separate personal liability insurance policy as soon as young people are employed or older than 25. In most cases, they remain co-insured as long as they live with their parents.
